Flugel Horn not Cornet!

Mrs Griffiths said I’d got it wrong in my earlier blog entry. She’s been playing the Flugel Horn, not the Cornet and it’s Mrs Kirby playing the Cornet, not the French Horn. I admit I wasn’t paying attention when it came to naming brass instruments. It might help me that one of the instruments is silver and the other gold! I tend to use my ears more than my other 4 senses and my ears tell me that they’re both great players and that’s what’s important!

Today’s session was really good. I got there a little before everyone else and set up the drums, but found out that Mrs Sagar wasn’t around to play the drums today. I hope she’s ok for next time. I set the kit up anyway as I can play a bit and Mrs Griffiths (the piano player as opposed to the brass player) had arranged for a bunch of pupils from the orchestra to sit in to listen. As it was I stuck to the bass again for our renditions of “Yesterday” and “Can You Feel The Love Tonight”.

The pupils were encouraged to play their instruments so in the end we had piano, bass, clarinets (2 from before plus newcomer Mrs Roberts making 3), Flugel Horn, Cornet with 3 violins, and 3 electronic keyboards courtesy of the pupils. A pupil without an instrument was the recording assistant so everyone had something to contribute.

At the end the staff had to go back to their classes to sort out end of the day things, but I was glad that I set the drums up as several of the pupils had a go on the drumkit and I got them playing some basic beats.  Every school should have an electronic drumkit - it’s a pity they are expensive.

Tommorrow I’m going to check out the orchestra and choir and on Friday I’m taking Dan with me (from Ghosting) for some lyric and songwriting workshop sessions with pupils. Hopefully we’ll bump into some of the other practitioners. A busy week to look forward to…..
